CELL CYCLE

DEFINITION

The sequence of events by which a cell duplicates its genome, synthesises other constituents of the cell and eventually divides into two daughter cells is called Cell Cycle.

PHASES OF THE CELL CYCLE

The cell cycle is divided into two basic phases:

  • INTERPHASE
    • G1 phase
    • S phase
    • G2 phase
  • M-PHASE
    • Karyokinesis
      • Prophase
      • Metaphase
      • Anaphase
      • Telophase
    • Cytokinesis

DOUBLING TIME

The time period in which the initial number of cells get doubled is called Doubling time. Doubling time represents the duration of the cell cycle. The duration of the cell cycle or the doubling time is directly proportional to the complexity of cell.

Example:

  • Bacteria – 20 min
  • Yeast – 90 min
  • Human cell – 24 hours
